Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda mostly pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. Arthritis is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion. )This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata , it results in a disease called amavata. This amavata is arthritis.
Ayurvedic approach to Arthritis includes:
- Strengthening the metabolic pathways that prevent blockage of circulatory channels to joints, by impurities
- Improving the digestion
- Lubrication and strengthening of joints
- Anything that aggravates Vata, will increase the sensitivity and experience of pain in the body. Therefore an important component in treating arthritic pain is to balance and stabilize Vata.
This can be achieved by Shaman and Shodhan (Panchkarma) Chikitsa,
Panchkarma is detoxification therapy which first aims to loosen and mobilise the accumulated toxins which is achieved by both internal and external oleation using herbal oils and steam. It stops deterioration of the joints and helps to rejunevate the damaged joints by normalizing the vitiated doshas
Treatment includes:
Virechanam - It is a method of purgation by oral intake of herbal formulas. In this the toxins found in gastro intestinal tract are flushed out through anal route.
Vasti - It is an effective enema therapy. Special medicines are introduced through the anal route for the evacuation of accumulated toxins and metabolic wastes.
Elakizhi- Entire body is massaged with herbal poultices, prepared with various herbs and medicated powder after they are warmed in medicated oils.
Njavarakizhi - A body massage in blouses with highly nutritious rice along with herbs.
Pizichil - Massaging the body with continuous pouring of medicated oils.
Dhara - Pouring continuous stream of medicated oil, buttermilk etc on the fore head and doing a gentle & soothing head massage which creates profound relaxation of the mind and body and revitalizes the central nervous system..
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy plays an important role in managing arthritis. It can help you to maintain independence through improved mobility, strength and flexibility. The physiotherapist can use the range of therapies and treatments to relieve pain and stiffness.
Pain relief methods
- Thermal (heat treatments)
These treatments produce heat within your body tissues. The application can be directed towards superficial or deeper parts of the body. The most common types of treatment used are infra-red radiation (heat lamps), wax baths and hot packs for superficial treatments, and microwave diathermy and shortwave diathermy for deep heating treatment.
- Electrical treatments (electrotherapy)
These treatments produce electrical stimulation of your body tissues. They may be extremely useful in the treatment of both acute and chronic arthritis, where pain, swelling and muscle spasms are present.
- Physical treatments
These treatments include the use of ultrasonic sound waves, ice therapy and traction.
Strength & flexibility
Exercise
A balanced program of rest and exercise, and careful attention to joint posture is an important part of pain management, joint protection and maintenance of your joint function. Controlled exercise helps lessen pain and stiffness and improves the strength of muscles and ligaments, so helping to stabilize joints.
Manual therapy
Mobilization and manipulation techniques are passive movements applied to a joint or soft tissue by the therapist in a specific manner to help restore full movement to a joint that is painful and restricted. Manual therapy is often useful in the chronic forms of arthritis and is often successful when other methods such as heat and exercises have given little or no relief.
Yoga and Meditation
The mild body movements and gentle pressures of the yogic postures keeps the affected joints mobile and prevents further damage and reduces pain. Stretching postures done with rhythmic breathing techniques helps one to relax and release the muscles that are crumpled around the joints.
Diet and Lifestyle:
- Foods which are easily digestible and do not make wind or gas are good. Vegetable juices and soups are good. Fruits like apples, oranges, grapes and papaya can be taken. Cooking with spices like cumin, coriander, ginger, asafetida, garlic, fennel and turmeric is also helps a lot.
- Avoid eating hot, spicy and fried foods, sweets, wind forming foods like cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, okra and potatoes should be prohibited. Avoid taking too much tea, coffee, alcohol, white sugar, yogurt, chocolate and cocoa, excessive smoking
- Sleeping during day time, staying up late in the night and mental tensions like worry, anxiety, fear, stress and grief etc., should be given up. Regular physical exercise and every day massage with oil, once or twice a week, should form an important part of life style.
We have an experienced team of Ayurvedic doctor, physiotherapist, yoga & meditation trainer and diet advisers who will decide the frequency and the intensity of the treatment according to the severity of the pain and the age of the patients.

Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy involves a variety of therapeutic approaches in managing neck pain. Common among the treatment options for neck physiotherapy are massage, manipulation, application of modalities such as hot or cold compresses, electrical stimulation and neck exercises. The aims of these types of therapeutic approaches to neck pain are to relieve inflammation, relax the cervical muscles, relieve neck pain, reduce compression to the cervical discs, strengthen the neck muscles and promote its muscular tensile strength, flexibility and mobility.
Traction. Traction uses weights and pulleys to gently stretch your neck and keep it immobilized. This therapy, under supervision of a medical professional and physical therapist, may provide relatively fast relief of some neck pain, especially pain related to nerve root irritation.
Physical Therapy Exercises
Because neck pain most frequently occurs due to muscular strain and injury, strengthening the neck muscles is vital in order to withstand cervical immobility and stiffness in the presence of neck pain. Stretching exercises improve the flexibility of the neck, which may become immobilized by pain. Basic range-of-motion exercises such as flexion, extension, side bending and rotation of the neck are done in gradual ranges that are tolerable to the patient. Neck exercises are integral in maintaining range of motion and warding off stiffness and pain.
Prevention
Most neck pain is associated with poor posture on top of age-related wear and tear. To help prevent neck pain, keep your head centered over your spine, so gravity works with your neck instead of against it. Some simple changes in your daily routine may help. Consider trying to:
Take frequent breaks if you drive long distances or work long hours at your computer. Keep your head back, over your spine, to reduce neck strain. Try to avoid gritting your teeth.
Adjust your desk, chair and computer so the monitor is at eye level. Knees should be slightly lower than hips. Use your chair's armrests.
Avoid tucking the phone between your ear and shoulder when you talk. If you use the phone a lot, get a headset.
Stretch frequently if you work at a desk. Shrug your shoulders up and down. Pull your shoulder blades together and then relax. Pull your shoulders down while leaning your head to each side to stretch your neck muscles.
Balance your base. Stretching the front chest wall muscles and strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blade and back of the shoulder can promote a balanced base of support for the neck.
Avoid sleeping on your stomach. This position puts stress on your neck. Choose a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck.
Neck pain is a common complaint. Most causes of neck pain aren't serious. Neck muscles can be strained from poor posture - whether it's leaning into your computer at work or hunching over your workbench doing hobbies at home. Wear-and-tear arthritis also is a common cause of neck pain.
Neck pain can result from a variety of causes, ranging from overuse injuries and whiplash to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and meningitis.
Muscle strains
Overuse, such as too many hours hunched over a steering wheel, often triggers muscle strains. Neck muscles, particularly those in the back of your neck, become fatigued and eventually strained. When you overuse your neck muscles repeatedly, chronic pain can develop. Even such minor things as reading in bed or gritting your teeth can strain neck muscles.
Worn joints
just like all the other joints in your body, your neck joints tend to experience wear and tear with age, which can cause osteoarthritis in your neck.
Nerve compression
a variety of problems in your neck's vertebrae can reduce the amount of space available for nerves to branch out from the spinal cord. Examples include:
Stiffened disks. As you age, the cushioning disks between your vertebrae become dry and stiff, narrowing the spaces in your spinal column where the nerves exit.
Herniated disks. This occurs when the inner gel-like material of a disk protrudes through the disk's tougher outer covering. The protrusion can press on nerves exiting the spinal column, causing arm pain or weakness, or on the spinal cord itself.
Bone spurs. Arthritic joints in your neck can develop bony growths that may press on nerves.
Injuries
Rear-end collisions often result in whiplash injuries, which occur when the head is jerked forward and then backward, stretching the soft tissues of the neck beyond their limits.
Risk factors for neck pain include:
Age. The neck is often affected by the wear-and-tear variety of arthritis (osteoarthritis), which becomes more common with age.
Occupation. Your risk of neck pain may be higher if your job requires your neck to be held in one position for prolonged periods of time. Examples include driving and computer work.
Preparing for your appointment
During the physical exam, your doctor will check for:
Pain. Severity of the pain, type of the pain like (localize or radiating pain)
Tenderness. Pressing on various spots on your neck, head and shoulders helps reveal areas of tenderness.
Pain. Severity of the pain, type of the pain like (localize or radiating pain)
Range of motion. This exam involves moving your head as far as it can go forward, backward and side to side. The doctor may also check to see if the movements of your shoulders have been impaired.
Numbness or weakness. Areas of numbness or muscle weakness may indicate that your spinal cord or a nerve exiting your spinal cord is being pinched.
Tests and diagnosis
Your doctor often will be able to diagnose the cause of your neck pain and recommend treatment just by asking questions about the type, location and onset of your pain. In some instances, however, imaging tests, nerve tests or lab tests may be warranted

Sciatica
Sciatica is pain in the lower extremity resulting from irritation of the sciatic nerve. The pain of sciatica is typically felt from the low back (lumbar area) to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins from nerve roots in the lumbar spinal cord in the low back and extends through the buttock area to send nerve endings down the lower limb. The pain of sciatica is sometimes referred to as sciatic nerve pain
Causes
While sciatica is most commonly a result of a lumbar disc hernia ion directly pressing on the nerve, any cause of irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve can reproduce the symptoms of sciatica. This irritation of nerves as a result of an abnormal intervertebral disc is referred to as radiculopathy. Aside from a pinched nerve from a disc, other causes of sciatica include irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone, tumors, muscle, internal bleeding, infections, injury, and other causes. Sometimes sciatica can occur because of irritation of the sciatic nerve during pregnancy.
Symptoms
Sciatica causes pain, a burning sensation, numbness, or tingling radiating from the lower back and upper buttock down the back of the thigh to the back of the leg. The result is leg pain. Sometimes the pain radiates around the hip or buttock to feel like hip pain. While sciatica is often associated with lower back pain (lumbago), it can be present without low back pain. Severe sciatica can make walking difficult if not impossible. Sometimes the symptoms of sciatica are aggravated by walking or bending at the waist and relieved by lying down. The pain relief by changing positions can be partial or complete.
Diagnoses
Sciatica is diagnosed with a physical exam and medical history. The typical symptoms and certain examination maneuvers help the health-care practitioner to diagnose sciatica. Sometimes, X-rays, films, and other tests, such as CT scan, MRI scan, and electromyogram, are used to further define the exact causes of sciatica.
